How To Apply

The National Board for Certification for Training Administrators in Graduate Medical Education offers certification for Program Administrators, Program Coordinators, Institutional GME Administrators and Administrative Designated Institutional Officers (DIOs) of accredited ACGME or AOA residency and fellowship programs.

Initial Certification – Applicant Eligibility

  • Must be currently employed as a GME professional of an accredited ACGME/AOA program and have completed 2 consecutive years of experience in this role by February 28 of the year you wish to certify.
  • Within the previous 3 years have obtained 15 Education Credits where the focus is GME or professional growth. Education Credits may be accumulated through attendance at national, regional or state conferences and meetings; institutional meetings; webinars, podcasts and completion of online modules. The focus of these must be GME or professional growth/development, with the majority being GME-related.  One hour of conference or meeting activity = one Education Credit (1 hr. = 1 EC). Meeting titles and sponsoring institutions or groups should not be abbreviated on the application. Routine staff meetings, GMEC meetings, CLER site visits, department orientation or and Clinical Competency Committee meetings are not applicable to Education Credit totals.   • A sample of the Application for Initial Certification will be available beginning November 1.
  • The link to complete and upload Application documents will be available January 1, 2018.
    Be sure to complete ALL fields – failure to do so will result in a delay of application processing.
  • The $335.00 application fee may be paid by credit card (via PayPal on our Applications portal), personal check, money order, certified check or institutional check in U.S. funds. All checks or money order payments must be received by February 28th and mailed to:

Maintenance of Certification – Applicant Eligibility

  • Must be a currently TAGME-certified GME professional of an accredited ACGME/AOA program and have completed 8 years of experience by February 28 of the year you wish to re-certify.
  • Within the previous 5 years have obtained 20 Education Credits where the focus is GME or professional growth.
  • Within the previous 5 years, completed 2 Personal Professional Growth (PPG) experiences. PPG experiences are defined as presentations at the national, regional, state, institution or department level; poster presentations or manuscripts published; having an active role in an activity or committee at the national, regional, state, or institutional level; or holding a leadership position at the department level. Presentations are defined as a prepared talk or lecture to an audience or group on an aspect of GME or related professional development. For active or leadership roles, please list years served, position held and organization. For lecture or conference presentations, please list title, meeting name/organization and location. Routine staff meetings, GMEC meetings, CLER site visits, department orientation or Clinical Competency Committee meetings are not eligible towards Education Credit totals.
  • A sample of the Application for Maintenance of Certification will be available beginning November 1.
